Have you heard about the witch who lives deep inside the woods?
Past the ridge, deep in the bog. She’s lived there 1000 years.
Invisible in the trees, she listens, waits, and sees.
She listens. Waits. And she sees.
I heard she feeds in flesh.
I heard she crews on bones.
Her preference is for rotten meat,
torn from the bodies they won’t miss.
Easily lured, easily led. The weak crave power.
Nobody searches for them.
Nobody wants them back.
Let loose the anchors of the weakest men.
May their bodies always find their way
off our paths, into the fog and onto her dinner plate.
I heard she feeds in flesh.
I heard she chews on bones.

Nobody wants them back.
Have you heard about the witch from the woods?
She mutilated a man, and left his carcass at the gate.
It was quite a mess to clean up, but the neighbors
didn’t mind.
She feeds on their disease.
Her hunger is their cure.

Eyes pried.
Blue light,
they arrive.
Fester. Enter.
My old friend, you are my night.
Imbued as a child I know their presence well.
They twist my back and they whisper words of Hell.
“You’ll never rest. You belong to us.”
The morning eludes me.
So I’ll sew a circle of salt
and wield a blade garnished with sage.
A wreath of smoke to cloak my being
and I call the ancestors names.
You must leave this place.
You who are most unclean.
Leave this body. Leave this child.
You are not needed anymore.
You are wanted
